January in the Cape
January is high summer here. The days are long, dry and warm at around 28°C or 82°F, while the evenings are cooler. Sunset is close to 8pm, which leaves plenty of time to enjoy the light.

A short guide
Two very different worlds, an hour apart: a city between a mountain and two oceans, and a valley of old wine farms.
How far apart everything is
Cape Town is about 50 to 60 minutes from the Winelands. Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl are all within 30 minutes of one another, and the Atlantic beaches are about an hour from the vineyards.
Where to base yourself in the city
We like the V&A Waterfront for convenience, Camps Bay and Bakoven for the sea, Constantia for gardens and wine, and the City Bowl or Gardens for restaurants and walking.
Practical notes
The currency is the South African Rand and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Driving is on the left, tap water is safe in the Cape and tipping is usually 10 to 15%.
